Banyuwedang Hot Spring: Bali's Salty Sulphur Soak Right by the Sea

If your idea of a Balinese hot spring is a crowded mountain pool like Air Panas Banjar, Banyuwedang Hot Spring will feel like another world. Its source surfaces right at the shoreline, among the mangroves of Pejarakan Village in Gerokgak, Buleleng — about 15 minutes from Pemuteran and close to the gate of West Bali National Park. The name Banyuwedang means “boiling water”, and locals have long trusted it as a therapy for skin complaints.

Salty Water With a Sulphur Scent

Here is what makes it unique: the spring rises from the floor of the bay and mixes with seawater, so it tastes salty and smells of sulphur at once. At low tide you can see hot bubbles rising between the mangrove roots.

  • Temperature: around 40°C — warm enough to loosen tired muscles without scalding you.
  • Minerals: sulphur, sea salt and trace minerals; the feel is quite different from a mountain hot spring.
  • Atmosphere: a quiet mangrove coastline, far from the crowds of southern Bali.

Public Pool or the Resort Version

There are two ways to enjoy it. The public bathing pool is simple, with changing cubicles and small food stalls, and tickets stay cheap at roughly Rp10,000–25,000 per person. The luxury version sits at Mimpi Resort Menjangan, built directly above the Banyuwedang source and channelling it into communal hot spring pools as well as a private pool in every villa.

Soaking Tips and Trip Planning

  • Bring a bottle of fresh water to rinse off; leftover salt and sulphur feel sticky on the skin.
  • Take off silver jewellery before you get in — sulphur tarnishes it black.
  • Limit each soak to 15–20 minutes, then rest and drink water.
  • Pair it with a morning snorkelling trip to Menjangan Island from the Banyuwedang jetty, then soak in the afternoon.
