USS Liberty Shipwreck, Tulamben

The USS Liberty is a WWII-era American cargo ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. It was beached at Tulamben, then the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung pushed it into the sea. Today the roughly 120-metre wreck lies on its side on a black-sand slope, only metres from the shoreline — making it one of the easiest and most beautiful wreck dives in the world.

Diving & Snorkeling

The wreck stretches from about 5 metres down to 30 metres, now covered in soft coral, gorgonians and schools of big jacks. Because the top is so shallow, even snorkelers can see parts of the ship from the surface.

  • Depth: about 5–30 m; suitable for Open Water through to experienced divers.
  • Difficulty: easy; entry over a rocky beach (booties recommended).
  • Dive cost: around Rp350,000–600,000 per dive including gear; snorkeling is much cheaper.
  • Best time: early-morning dives (06:00–08:00) before crowds and when the water is clearest.

Getting There

Tulamben sits on Bali's northeast coast, about 2–2.5 hours' drive from Ubud or Sanur, near Amed. Most divers stay overnight to dive at dawn.

  • Bring: swimwear, towel, sandals/booties, reef-safe sunscreen, drinking water.
  • Gear rental: available at dive operators and beachside kiosks.
