You cannot trek alone on the Prapat Agung peninsula. West Bali National Park (TNBB) requires an official ranger or local guide for trekking and birdwatching, and visitors pay for it. Entry is Rp200,000 a day for foreigners, and Rp20,000 (weekdays) or Rp30,000 (holidays) for Indonesians. These figures come from the park's official e-ticket system, matadewabtnbb.com, and have applied since October 2024 (checked September 2026). Some blogs still quote Rp300,000 for foreigners at weekends. That is the old rate.
Prapat Agung is the peninsula at Bali's north-western tip and covers almost half the park. It holds savanna, monsoon forest, mangroves and beaches. The plan below covers one morning with a guide.
The day before: permit and guide
- Afternoon, 14.00-15.00. Go to the TNBB headquarters at Cekik (about 2 km from Gilimanuk port) or the Labuan Lalang resort office on the Pemuteran side. Book a guide for the next morning. According to westbali.net, ranger stations are only staffed around 08.00-15.00, so a dawn trek has to be booked the day before.
- Ask about the route. The park publishes no official list of trails. Your guide will choose based on conditions. The ones travel sources mention most: Tegal Bunder near Sumberklampok (about 2 hours, flat, for birds) and the savanna around Teluk Brumbun, where deer often graze. Ask about the guide fee too. It is not in the ticket table, so agree on it before you set off.
- Pay for the ticket. Since 2025 the park has moved to e-tickets and cashless payment. Have QRIS or a card ready.
Trek day, hour by hour
- 05.15 Leave Pemuteran for Labuan Lalang (about 15 minutes), or Gilimanuk for Cekik (5 minutes). Parking is Rp10,000 for a car, Rp5,000 for a motorbike.
- 06.00-08.00 Walk slowly with your guide. These are the best hours for birds. The park's 2025 performance report counts 515 Bali starlings in the wild, 337 of them inside the park. There is still no guarantee you will see one. Banteng, deer, leaf monkeys and fruit bats also live here.
- 08.00-08.30 Break at the edge of the savanna or the beach. On clear days Java's Raung and Ijen volcanoes stand out across the strait.
- 08.30-09.30 Head back before the sun gets high. The savanna sections have almost no shade.
- From 10.00 (optional) Drive about 30 minutes to Pura Segara Rupek at the tip of the peninsula. The road was paved in 2023-2024; it is narrow and monkeys often cross. Another option: snorkel at Menjangan Island from Labuan Lalang later in the day.
The hassles
- There are no warungs or water sources on the trails. Bring at least 1.5 litres per person, a hat and closed shoes.
- The dry season (May-October) is when trails are driest and easiest. But the park's report also lists Prapat Agung as a forest-fire hotspot, so trails may close temporarily. Ask when you book your guide.
- If you only want a close look at a Bali starling, a three-hour walk in the heat may not be worth it. Wild starlings are also often seen in the buffer villages around the park.
- Guides almost always need booking in advance. Turning up at 06.00 with no arrangement usually means waiting for the office to open.
Contacts and where to stay

- Where to stay: Pemuteran is the most practical base for a dawn start at Labuan Lalang, Gilimanuk for a start at Cekik. You can check hotel vouchers in Pemuteran on AccessiaPass.
If you still have time after the trek, the Jayaprana tomb at Teluk Terima is only a few minutes from Labuan Lalang. Go before 11.00, as the heat in West Bali builds quickly.
