In the middle of Pejeng village, about a 20-minute drive northeast of central Ubud, stands a small temple whose name means “navel of the world”. Pura Pusering Jagat is believed to date from the 14th century, the late Bedahulu kingdom era, and it remains quiet and coach-free even though it sits only a few kilometres from the busy Tampaksiring route.
The Stone Vessel and the Churning of Mandara Giri
Its centrepiece is a large stone vessel ringed with finely cut reliefs. The carvings depict the Samudramanthana — gods and demons churning Mount Mandara in the ocean of milk to obtain tirta amerta, the water of life. That story is why the temple is regarded as the island's spiritual centre point.
- Andesite reliefs still clearly legible after centuries
- Several ancient statues and lingga kept in the inner courtyard
- The compound is small — 20 to 30 unhurried minutes is enough
Pejeng, Heartland of Ancient Balinese Archaeology
Pejeng is no ordinary village. It holds one of the densest concentrations of ancient Balinese remains on the island. Set aside half a day and combine your visit:
- Pura Penataran Sasih — home of the “Moon of Pejeng”, a prehistoric bronze kettledrum counted among the largest in the world. Roughly 5 minutes away by car.
- Gedong Arca Archaeological Museum — sarcophagi, statuary and megalithic artefacts. Generally open Monday to Thursday, morning to late afternoon, with a very small entry fee or donation.
- Simple local warung along the Pejeng road for lunch at around Rp25,000–40,000.
Etiquette and Rules for Visitors
- A sarong and sash are mandatory. Loaners are usually available at the entrance, but bringing your own is more comfortable.
- Voluntary donation — around Rp10,000–25,000 per person is appropriate; place it in the donation box.
- By customary rule, menstruating women and people in mourning may not enter.
- Never climb on shrines, do not stand higher than a priest, and ask permission before photographing during a ceremony.
