Pura Pucak Tedung, Sulangai: The Overlooked 730 m Hill Temple of North Badung

On a ridge in Sulangai village, Petang district, stands a temple that almost never makes a tour operator’s itinerary: Pura Luhur Pucak Tedung. It sits about 730 metres above sea level, roughly 37 km from Denpasar. On an ordinary day you may share its courtyard only with the pemangku and the wind. This is not a temple for chasing photos; it is a temple for sitting still a while.

The legend of Dang Hyang Nirartha’s umbrella

The name comes from the journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha from Pulaki towards east Bali. He is said to have rested on a high ridge in the Petang area and left behind his tedung — his ceremonial umbrella. Villagers saw it glowing at night, and the King of Mengwi ordered a three-tiered meru built in tribute. To this day the temple holds Dang Kahyangan status and is cared for by eight traditional villages across Petang district: Sulangai, Batulantang, Sandakan, Angantiga, Kerta, Lipah, Munduk Damping and Petang.

What you actually see from up there

  • A three-way panorama: from the jaba, the outer courtyard, the landscapes of east, west and south Bali open up at once on a clear day.
  • Morning mist: come between 07.00 and 09.00 if you want to watch the fog rise out of the valley; after 11.00 it has usually burned off.
  • Tiered shrines: besides the three-tiered meru there are tall pelinggih in the inner sanctum — photograph them from the middle courtyard and do not climb into the holiest area.

Entry rules, piodalan, and honest expectations

There is no ticket booth and no official fee; a voluntary dana punia donation is the norm. A kamen and sash are compulsory, and you should bring your own — sarong rental is not always available here the way it is at tourist temples. Women who are menstruating may not enter, a rule that applies at every Balinese temple.

The pujawali is held every 210 days on Tumpek Krulut. In 2026 it fell on 3 January and 1 August; the next round is expected around late February 2027 — confirm it against the Balinese calendar, since the date follows the wuku cycle. To be honest: there is no cafe, the toilets are basic, and the nearby warung are not always open. Bring your own water and a snack.

The Sangeh–Sulangai–Petang route is best taken slowly from early morning, and driving back down to south Bali in the dark is no fun. If you would rather stay a night in Ubud or around Mengwi before exploring North Badung, compare prices and book a hotel voucher on AccessiaPass.
