Pura Pegulingan sits in Banjar Basangambu, Manukaya village, Tampaksiring, about 1.5 km from Tirta Empul. From outside it looks like an ordinary Balinese temple with three courtyards (nista, madya, utama), but its centre is the base of a Buddhist stupa. Villagers uncovered it in 1982 while digging to build a Padmasana Agung shrine, and archaeologists studied it in 1983. Here is what people tend to miss before visiting.
1. You see a foundation, not a complete monument
Balinese cultural sources describe an octagonal building foundation, Buddha statues, a miniature stupa of about 80 cm, and a stone box (pripih) holding 62 clay tablets stamped with the "Ye-Te" mantra in Pranagari script, metal plates and fragments of a bronze bowl. Do not expect a structure the size of Borobudur. The value is in the evidence that Hindu and Buddhist communities once lived side by side in the Pakerisan valley.
2. Its age is still debated
NOW! Bali (August 2025) follows the Lontar Usana Bali: built under King Masula Masuli in Saka 1100, or 1178 AD. Other sources say the 8th or 11th century. If a guide gives one date with total confidence, treat it as one version.
3. The lane is narrow, scooters are easier
Access from the main Tampaksiring road is via a narrow village lane, and local sources recommend two-wheelers. Tour minibuses struggle to pass oncoming traffic. From Ubud allow about 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic in Tegallalang.
4. No official fee is published
As of October 2026 we found no official ticket price or opening hours. Bring small cash for a donation and your own sarong or sash, since sarong rental like at Tirta Empul may not be available.
5. It is an active temple
During a piodalan or other ceremony the inner courtyard may be closed to visitors. Under Balinese custom, women who are menstruating do not enter the temple. Do not climb the stupa structure for photos.
6. Who will find it underwhelming?
Visitors looking for a purification pool or a dramatic view will find it quiet and flat. It means the most to people interested in history and archaeology.
