From Pasar Selat in Karangasem the road narrows and winds uphill between salak orchards until it ends at the car park of Pura Pasar Agung Giri Tohlangkir. The temple stands on the southern slope of Mount Agung, in Banjar Sogra, Sebudi village, at roughly 1,500 metres — high enough for the air to feel cold even at midday. For hikers, this is the trailhead of the shortest route to the summit.
Long Stairways and Valley Panorama
From the car park, some 280 steps take visitors up to the main courtyard in a leisurely 10–20 minutes.
- The view opens over the Selat and Sidemen valleys, clearest before 09.00 while the mist has not yet risen.
- The temple was swept away by material from the 1963 Mount Agung eruption and later rebuilt; it remains spiritually tied to Pura Besakih.
Basecamp for the Shortest Summit Route
- Climbs usually start in the small hours, around 01.00–02.00, to reach the top at sunrise.
- Allow 4.5–6 hours up and about the same down; the trail is steep and slippery after rain.
- Registration at the climbing post is required; a local guide is mandatory for first-timers, and children under 12 are not allowed on the climb.
Rules and Temple Etiquette
- The temple and trail close during major ceremonies and whenever Mount Agung’s volcanic alert level rises — check the latest information before you go.
- Women who are menstruating and people in mourning may not enter; carrying beef is also forbidden.
- Never stand higher than a pemangku (temple priest) and do not fly a drone without permission.
