Pura Luhur Uluwatu: Clifftop Temple 70m Above the Sea & Sunset Kecak Dance

Perched dramatically on the edge of a coral cliff about 70 meters above the crashing Indian Ocean, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six sad kahyangan temples that spiritually anchor the island. Beyond its sacred significance, the temple is famous for its dramatic setting: a clifftop path with views over an endless blue sea, best visited toward late afternoon.

The Kecak Dance at Sunset

The main draw is the daily Kecak dance, performed in an open-air amphitheater on the cliff edge, usually starting around 6 p.m. as the sky turns crimson. Dozens of male performers sit in a circle chanting "cak-cak-cak" with no musical instruments, accompanying the Ramayana epic that closes with Hanuman surrounded by fire. Arrive early (around 5 p.m.) to grab a seat with the sunset as your backdrop.

Mischievous Monkeys & the Sarong Rule

The temple grounds are home to a troop of notoriously cheeky long-tailed macaques. They often snatch sunglasses, hats, phones, or water bottles. Keep valuables zipped in a closed bag and never tease them. To enter, visitors must wear a sarong and sash as a sign of respect; both are lent for free at the entrance. Wear comfortable footwear, as the clifftop path is uphill and very windy.

• Hours: generally 7 a.m.–7 p.m.; the Kecak dance starts around 6 p.m. (check the schedule at the ticket booth).
• Tickets: area entry since 1 January 2026 (Badung bylaw 8/2025; Bali Post, 29 January 2026) is Rp60,000 per adult and Rp40,000 per child for foreign visitors, Rp40,000 and Rp30,000 for Indonesians. The Kecak dance is sold separately at Rp150,000 per adult and Rp75,000 per child according to the temple's site (checked 21 October 2026). Fees for other sites are in Bali entrance fees 2026 by regency.
