Of the six great temples that anchor Bali spiritually — the Sad Kahyangan — one almost never appears on a day-tour itinerary: Pura Luhur Andakasa. It stands on the slope of Mount Andakasa, roughly 200 metres above sea level, in Antiga Kelod village, Manggis district, Karangasem. Quiet, steep, and precisely for that reason far more contemplative.
Guardian of the South in Dewata Nawasanga
In the Dewata Nawasanga cosmology, Andakasa holds the southern direction and is the temple of Hyang Tugu, or Dewa Brahma. It is believed to have been founded around the 11th century in the era of Mpu Kuturan, then expanded again during the 17th and 18th centuries. For Balinese Hindus it is one of the points that keeps the island in spiritual balance.
Climb the Stairs, Then the Sea Opens Up
The access road rises steeply. From the parking area you still have to walk up a long flight of stairs to reach the main courtyard. The reward is worth it:
- Open views across the Lombok Strait and the southern sea of Karangasem
- Near-total silence, with almost no vendors or tour groups
- Shady trees along the entire stairway
Visitor Etiquette
- A sarong and sash are compulsory
- Women who are menstruating, or anyone in a state of cuntaka, may not enter
- There is no official ticket, only a voluntary dana punia donation
- Respect worshippers and never climb on the shrines for photos

Come early in the morning while the air is still cool and the steps are not yet hot. Since Karangasem is a fair distance from south Bali, many visitors stay a night around Manggis or Candidasa — compare prices and book your staycation voucher first on AccessiaPass.
