Toyapakeh Beach, Nusa Penida: Painted Jukung, a Muslim Village and Toyapakeh Wall

Most visitors to Nusa Penida see Toyapakeh for all of five minutes: step off the fast boat, get in a car, race off to Kelingking. Yet this bay on the island's north-west side has water as clear as a swimming pool, rows of brightly painted jukung, and a village with no equal anywhere in Bali.

The Only Muslim Village on Nusa Penida

  • The name Toyapakeh comes from Balinese: toya (water) and pakeh (salty).
  • Residents hold that Islam arrived around 1925, and the community was gathered into this village in 1936.
  • Masjid Al Imron has stood since 1956, carrying Balinese-style ornamentation — a blend you rarely see.
  • This is the easiest place on Nusa Penida to find halal food: bakso, bakmi, even Padang restaurants.

Toyapakeh Wall: Top-Tier Snorkelling

  • A coral wall in the strait between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, with a shallow 4–6 metre plateau that suits snorkellers.
  • Permanent residents include schools of platax, fusiliers, sweetlips and giant trevally; mola-mola turn up around July–November.
  • Do not swim out from the beach. The current in the strait can run hard — always go with a boat and a guide.

Access, Costs and Best Timing

  • The Sanur–Toyapakeh/Banjar Nyuh fast boat takes about 45 minutes, roughly Rp170–250k one way, plus an island entry levy of around Rp25k.
  • First departures are around 06.30 and the last around 17.00; book online in high season.
  • Small jukung cross to Nusa Lembongan in only about 10 minutes from here.
  • Crystal Bay is roughly a 15–30 minute drive, Kelingking around 30–45 minutes.

Info Praktis & Reservasi

  • Access & booking: the beach and harbour are free to enter; costs only appear for parking, hiring a jukung, or joining a snorkelling trip. Fast boat tickets are best booked online a day ahead.
  • Social media: search on Instagram
  • Best hours & tips: mornings before 10.00, when the water is clearest and the boats are not yet full; dress modestly when walking through the village, especially near the mosque.

Compare prices and book your stay voucher at AccessiaPass before you cross, because rooms on Nusa Penida sell out fast in high season.
