While the beaches of south Bali fill up with paid loungers, Penimbangan Beach in Baktiseraga village still feels like it belongs to the people of Singaraja. It sits only about 4 km from the town centre, roughly a 10-minute drive, and every afternoon it turns into Buleleng’s open-air living room: mats rolled out, coffee steaming, the sun sinking slowly into the Bali Sea.
A black-sand city beach
The sand is the volcanic black typical of north Bali, with rocky patches that make swimming something to do carefully. The shoreline is long and flat — better suited to an evening walk, fishing or cycling than to a full day of sunbathing.
- Distance: about 4 km from central Singaraja; roughly 2.5–3 hours from Denpasar via the Bedugul route.
- Access: paved road right up to the shore along Jalan Pura Segara Penimbangan, comfortable for both scooters and cars.
- Parking: cheap, around Rp2,000 for a motorbike and Rp5,000 for a car.
Seaside floor-mat dining: from blayag to grilled corn
The real draw is not the sand but the row of warungs and cafes standing directly facing the water. There are simple tarpaulin warungs with mats on the ground, and more modern spots such as Rangon Sunset and Cozy Resto whose tables look straight out to sea.
- Signature dishes: Buleleng-style tipat blayag, grilled fish, grilled corn, toasted bread and young coconut ice.
- Price range: roughly Rp10,000–Rp35,000 per portion at the warungs.
- Busiest hours: 16:00–19:00, when Singaraja’s young crowd starts arriving.
Sunset, turtles and what else to do
Because the shoreline faces open water on Bali’s north coast, the sunset is visible in full with no cliffs in the way — the golden hour runs roughly 17:00–18:30. Penimbangan is also a conservation area: a turtle hatchery has been running since the mid-2000s, alongside coral reef and seagrass programmes managed together with Baktiseraga residents. Canoe rental usually costs around Rp10,000. Bring small cash, a hat and sandals you can slip off easily — black sand holds heat well into the afternoon.
