Candidasa is a small seaside town in Manggis district, Karangasem, about 60 km from Denpasar. The area was once known as Teluk Kehen, briefly became East Bali's tourism hub in the 1980s, and then slowed down. That is exactly its appeal today: a quiet main road, a lotus lagoon at the roadside, and the Lombok Strait stretching away to the east.
The Lotus Lagoon and the Temple on the Hill
The best-known landmark is the lagoon full of lotus flowers right across the main road. On the hillside stands Pura Candidasa; in a niche in the cliff below sits a statue of the goddess Hariti surrounded by children — the name "Cilidasa", meaning ten children, is believed to come from it.
- The lotus blooms most generously in the morning.
- Climb to the temple terrace for a view of the lagoon and the sea at once.
- Wear a sarong and sash inside the temple grounds, and respect any ceremony in progress.
Being Honest About the Beach
Do not come expecting a wide white-sand beach. Most of Candidasa's original shoreline was lost to erosion, and the coast is now held in place by concrete breakwaters and large boulders. Dark sand still appears in small pockets at low tide.
- Check the tide table; at high tide the beach can almost disappear under water.
- The concrete groynes and rocks are slippery with algae — wear non-slip sandals and never climb them during big swell.
- Sunrise over the sea is the real show here, around 6.00–6.30am.
A Calm Base for East Bali
Candidasa works well as a base. Tenganan Pegringsingan, the Bali Aga village, is only a few kilometres inland; Tirta Gangga is about 30 minutes northeast; Padangbai is close for fast boats. Demanding dives at Gili Mimpang, Tepekong and Biaha leave directly from here — the currents are strong and suit experienced divers only.
