Betutu Gunaksa Peliatan: Prices, Pre-Order and Pickup Times

A whole chicken betutu at Betutu Gunaksa in Peliatan cost Rp120,000 and a duck Rp130,000 according to detikBali's July 2023 feature; detikBali's June 2026 list says "from Rp130,000 per bird", so assume chicken is now around that too and confirm when ordering. One thing to know up front: there are no tables. You order ahead, pick up, and take it away.

What to order

There are only two items: whole chicken betutu or whole duck betutu. You choose dry or with broth, and how spicy. The bird is rubbed with base genep spice paste without MSG, wrapped in old areca palm sheath, then buried in smouldering rice husk for about 12 hours. The meat falls off the bone and the spices reach all the way through. The business is run by Ni Wayan Ningsih with her husband and two children; her in-laws used to sell at Ubud Market and moved home when the market was renovated.

Pickup times, not sell-out times

Because it cooks for 12 hours, betutu is never sold on the spot. Per detikBali in 2023 there are two batches: morning orders go into the embers at 4 p.m. and are ready around 6 a.m. the next day; afternoon orders go in at 6 a.m. and are ready around 4 p.m. A normal day sees about 30 orders and up to 100 before holidays, so for the next Galungan (13 January 2027) book well ahead. The shop runs roughly 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. according to detikBali's 2026 list.

The downsides

• Takeaway only. If your room has no kitchen or plates, bring rice and containers.
• Pre-order is required; turning up without one usually means leaving empty-handed.
• Betutu should be collected hot, so your schedule follows their fire.
• One whole bird is too much for a solo diner.

• Price: chicken about Rp120,000-130,000, duck about Rp130,000 per bird (checked October 2026 against two detikBali reports; confirm when ordering).
